Meenakshi Kalyanam

'Meenakshi Kalyanam' by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam is a riot of colours with participation of 45 dancers. This research product of her sister-in-law, Shyamala Balakrishnan, took a visual shape in the creative urge of Dr. Padma Subramaniam. It was presented for the first time in early 1960’s and continues to grip the attention of the audience to this day. Mythology says that the Pandian King was blessed to have Parvati Devi herself as his daughter Meenakshi, who was born out of the sacrificial fire. This tom boy of a girl grew up as a warrior-princess with manly demeanour and egoistic nature. She was transformed into a personification of feminine grace at the very sight of Lord Siva in the battle field. The wedding of Siva-Sundareswara and Meenakshi is a popular theme all over Tamilnadu.
